I'm really glad you're here!
Laying Down the Paw uses positive reinforcement, based on progressive research to train dogs. The emphasis is on humane techniques approved by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Humane Society of the United States. Using positive reinforcement training, I use well timed reinforcements to increase the behaviors you want to see more of, while decreasing those unwanted behaviors. Emphasis is placed on coming up with individual training plans based on your lifestyle. There are a lot of trainers out there, many with conflicting philosophies. It can be confusing, especially if you are feeling desperate and are being offered quick fixes. Strides are being made to set new standards for our industry, but it is still painfully easy to become a dog trainer with little knowledge on how animals actually learn. |
My esteemed colleagues and I are committed to staying current in our field. This means continuing education in the form of conferences and seminars in pursuit of the latest information on how animals really learn, and how best we can meet the needs of our clients.

Most owners feel “a little funny” using aversives on their pet, but trust the “expert” they have hired. Whether it be a collar that “only delivers a warning hum”, a squirt bottle, or a leash pop, these methods can seriously damage the relationship between you and your dog. Equally as heart breaking, these methods often make the unwanted behaviors go down hill even faster.
